Aeternum VTT: a 3D virtual tabletop for D&D 5e

Run D&D 5e in 3D, from a browser tab.

Aeternum VTT is a virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Upload a battlemap and it becomes the ground plane. Drop in OBJ, STL, or GLB models as tokens and props. Character sheets work out their own numbers, and dice roll straight from the sheet. Your players join from a browser, and nobody installs or hosts anything.

Free accounts are open during early access. Free is a working table with a few limits, not a demo. Plus is $5/month and Pro is $10/month, and your plan is the same whether you run the game or play in it.

What you can run at the table

Build a character in the browser and the sheet does the math. Click an attack, a skill, or a save and the dice roll from the sheet. Characters import and export as JSON, and they live in your own library, so you can seat one in any campaign you belong to.

  • Computed character sheets with dice that roll from attacks, skills, and saves
  • 3D battlemaps with fog of war, tokens, and OBJ / STL / GLB props
  • 2014 and 2024 D&D 5e rule sets, chosen per campaign
  • Email invites for players and co-GMs; hub separates run vs play campaigns
  • Journal, handouts, encounters, and a global slide-in session panel
  • Character JSON import/export and a user-level character library
  • Table and board display links for a second screen during live play

GMs invite players or co-GMs by email. Pending invites show up in your hub, where you accept or decline, and the hub keeps campaigns you run apart from campaigns you play. Table and board display links put the map on a second screen during a live session. Signed-in users can open support tickets in the app, and anyone can reach Support or email [email protected]. New campaigns start with SRD rules content, and each campaign picks the 2014 or 2024 rule set.

Rules content and attribution

The rules content that ships with this virtual tabletop comes from the D&D 5th Edition Systems Reference Document (SRD). The product isn't affiliated with Wizards of the Coast. The official text is on the Wizards Systems Reference Document page, and community mirrors like open5e.com carry it too. Everything on this site about plans and campaign tools describes this product only. More on the About page.

Why it works this way

The upgrade path sells room, not tools. Free is a real table with maps, characters, sessions, and the compendium. The table is hosted for you, so nobody in your group runs a server. The board is the browser, and Plus and Pro add a phone companion for HP, scores, and dice. It doesn't replace the board.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aeternum VTT free to use?

Yes. Free accounts are open during early access and include the real table tools under capacity caps (campaigns, seats, scenes, and storage). Plus is $5/month and Pro is $10/month for more capacity and a phone companion. Your plan is the same whether you run the game or play in it.

Do I need to download or host anything?

No. This virtual tabletop runs in the browser. Players join from a browser tab, and nobody in the group installs a client or runs a server. Upload battlemaps and place OBJ, STL, or GLB models as tokens and props.

Is Aeternum affiliated with Wizards of the Coast?

No. Bundled rules content comes from the D&D 5th Edition Systems Reference Document (SRD). Campaigns can use the 2014 or 2024 rule set. Aeternum is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.

What is the phone companion on Plus and Pro?

Plus and Pro add a phone companion for HP, ability scores, and dice during a live session. It is not a mobile version of the battle map — the board stays in the browser.

How do players join a campaign?

GMs invite players or co-GMs by email. Pending invites appear in the hub, where you accept or decline. The hub keeps campaigns you run apart from campaigns you play.
